Microsoft’s $1M AI Investment to Train 1 Million Nigerians and Boost Tech Innovation
Microsoft has announced a $1 million (N1.6 billion) investment in Nigeria over the next two years , aimed at training one million Nigerians in artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.
This initiative, announced at the Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos, is part of a broader plan to equip the workforce with skills that will power the nation’s growing digital economy.
Bridging the AI Skills Gap
As AI continues to reshape industries globally, Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s tech evolution. Microsoft’s initiative will provide training in AI, digital literacy, and cybersecurity, with a particular focus on youth and women, ensuring that underrepresented groups gain access to valuable career opportunities.
Ola Williams, Microsoft’s Managing Director for Nigeria and Ghana, emphasized that AI is not about replacing jobs but creating new opportunities. She highlighted the potential of AI to generate over 70 million jobs in Nigeria, making digital skills an essential tool for future employment.
The Economic Impact of AI in Nigeria
With AI adoption accelerating worldwide, Nigeria stands to benefit significantly from a projected 27.08% annual growth rate in its AI market from 2025 to 2030. Experts estimate that AI could contribute $15 billion to Nigeria’s GDP by 2030, reinforcing the need for a skilled workforce to sustain this momentum.
